Paphiopedilum barbigerum var. coccineum sp. (also recognized as the distinct species Paphiopedilum coccineum) is a rare, small-sized lady's slipper orchid native to the limestone mountains of Vietnam and southern China. This highly collectible botanical jewel grows as a litho-terrestrial in vertical rock fissures filled with rich leaf litter humus, prized for its dwarf footprint and intense, dramatic coloration compared to the standard form of the species.

  • Features a striking, rich color combination with a pinched, hooded white dorsal sepal marked by a dark red-brown center, paired with glossy, ruffled yellow-green to bronze petals and a far redder, brick-red or chestnut slipper pouch.
  • Shoots up a short, dark purple fuzzy stem that bears a single, waxy flower up to 6–10 cm wide—making the bloom look beautifully large and dramatic compared to the plant's tiny rosette of narrow, uniformly green leaves.
  • Thrives in intermediate settings. It bursts into bloom during the late summer to early autumn season, providing a highly durable, waxy flower that remains pristine on a windowsill for several weeks.

  • Requires low to medium, bright indirect light. Mimicking its natural cliffside habitat under the forest canopy, it should be kept safely shielded from harsh direct sunlight to prevent leaf scorching.
  • Maintain consistent moisture by watering thoroughly just as the potting mix approaches dryness. Slipper orchids do not have water-storing pseudobulbs, so they enjoy staying humid and slightly damp, though the mix should never become soggy or sit in standing water.
  • Grows best in comfortable, intermediate household temperatures ranging between 15°C and 32°C. It thrives in an aerated, well-draining mixture of small-to-medium fir bark, charcoal, and perlite, and heavily benefits from using water low in salts to keep its roots healthy.
